35.4 Bē-hù siá-liáu boeh kóng ê ōe, i tō tn̄g-khùi

Hit-ê siâⁿ-chhī lâng kóng:

"Chit kúi-ji̍t, ū chi̍t-hāng chòe koài-kî ê tāi-chì. Thiaⁿ-kóng, tòa tī San Giovanni ê hó-gia̍h lâng Anselmo in hó pêng-iú Lothario, cha-àm kā Anselmo ê bó͘ Camilla chhōa-cháu, á Anselmo pún-lâng mā siau-sit khì. It-chhè chiah-ê lóng sī Camilla ê chi̍t-ê cha-bó͘-kán kóng ê. Cha-àm, hit-ê cha-bó͘-kán kō͘ phōe-toaⁿ ùi Anselmo ê chhù-thang lūi lo̍h-lâi, khì hō͘ chóng-tok chang tio̍h. "Kám ū-lâng chai-iáⁿ," Anselmo mn̄g, " Lothario kap Camilla cháu khì tó-ūi?"

"Oân-choân m̄-chai neh," chhī-bîn ìn, "sui-bóng, chóng-tok í-keng chīn-la̍t teh cháu-chhōe in."

"Sîn pó-pì lí, sian-siⁿ," Anselmo kóng.

"Sîn mā tī lí sin-piⁿ," chhī-bîn kóng, jiân-āu kè-sio̍k kiâⁿ i ê lō͘.

Chit-ê chai-lān tek ê chêng-pò, hō͘ Anselmo khì kah boeh khí-siáu, sīm-chì khì kah boeh bô-miā. I chīn-la̍t kian-chhî, lâi kàu pêng-iú in tau. Anselmo siá kàu chia, hián-jiân, iáu-bōe siá oân i só͘ boeh kóng ê ōe, i ê sèⁿ-miā tō kiat-sok ah. Keh-kang, pêng-iú hiòng Anselmo ê chhin-chiân thong-pò i sí-bông ê siau-sit, in mā lóng í-keng chai-iáⁿ i sit-bīn-chú ê tāi-chì. Pêng-iú mā ū thong-pò kàu Camilla só͘ tòa ê siu-tō-īⁿ. 35.4 袂赴寫了欲講 ê 話, 伊 tō 斷氣 

彼个城市人講:

"這幾日, 有一項最怪奇 ê 代誌. 聽講, 蹛 tī San Giovanni ê 好額人 Anselmo in 好朋友 Lothario, 昨暗 kā Anselmo ê 某 Camilla 𤆬走, á Anselmo 本人 mā 消失去. 一切 chiah-ê lóng 是 Camilla ê 一个查某𡢃講 ê. 昨暗, 彼个查某𡢃 kō͘ 被單 ùi Anselmo ê 厝窗縋落來, 去 hō͘ 總督㨑著. 我 mā 無確定代誌 ê 實情, 我 kan-ta 知, 規城 ê 人 lóng 為這件代誌 teh 著驚, 因為無人料著這款代誌 ē 發生, 因為 in 中間有偉大 koh 密切 ê 友情, 雙人好 kah 人人稱呼 in 是 ‘Hit 對朋友.’"

"Kám 有人知影," Anselmo 問, " Lothario kap Camilla 走去佗位?"

"完全毋知 neh," 市民應, "雖罔, 總督已經盡力 teh 走揣 in."

"神保庇你, 先生," Anselmo 講.

"神 mā tī 你身邊," 市民講, 然後繼續行伊 ê 路.

這个災難 tek ê 情報, hō͘ Anselmo 氣 kah 欲起痟, 甚至氣 kah 欲無命. 伊盡力堅持, 來到朋友 in 兜. 朋友猶毋知伊 ê 不幸, 看伊面色白 chhi-chhi, 忝 koh làu-chhe̍h, 知影伊拄著大艱苦. Anselmo 即時請求 hō͘ 伊歇睏, koh kā 借寫字 ê 文具. 朋友照伊 ê 吩咐做, 留伊單獨倒 tī 房間, che 是伊 ê 意願, 甚至 kā 門鎖著.

Ka-tī 一人 ê 時, 伊深深思考 ka-tī ê 不幸, ùi 體內感覺著死亡 ê 信號, 知影 ka-tī ê 性命得欲結束, 所致決定欲留落一个聲明, 交代伊這種奇怪結束 ê 因端. 伊開始寫, m̄-koh 猶袂赴寫了所想欲講 ê 話, 伊 tō 斷氣, 性命結束, 死 tī 因為失策好奇所引起 ê 痛苦.

厝主看天 to 暗 ah, Anselmo 猶無聲無說, 決定欲入去看覓, kám 是病情有啥無拄好. 伊發現伊面仆 leh, 身軀一半 tī 眠床, 一半 tī 寫字桌. Tī 桌頂伊寫 ê 字紙鋪開開, 筆猶攑 tī 手.

叫伊, 無應, 主人緊行倚, la̍k 伊 ê 手, 感覺冷冷, 才知伊已經死. 大著驚 koh 心艱苦, 緊叫厝內人過來, 見證 Anselmo 所拄著 ê 悲慘命運. 伊讀 hit 張紙, 認出 he 是伊 ê 筆跡, 內容 án-ne 寫:

"戇 koh 失策 ê 願望奪去我 ê 性命. 假使我死 ê 消息傳到 Camilla ê 耳空, 請 kā 她講, 我原諒她, 因為她無義務創造奇蹟, 我 mā 無應該要求她去創造 he. 既然我 ê 恥辱是我 ka-tī 創造 ê, tō 無理由..."

Anselmo 寫到 chia, 顯然, 猶未寫完伊所欲講 ê 話, 伊 ê 性命 tō 結束 ah. 隔工, 朋友向 Anselmo ê 親情通報伊死亡 ê 消息, in mā lóng 已經知影伊失面子 ê 代誌. 朋友 mā 有通報到 Camilla 所蹛 ê 修道院. Tī hia, Camilla 險仔陪翁婿行仝 hit 條不歸路, 毋是因為她聽著翁婿死, 是因為她聽講她 ê 愛人 Lothario 失蹤去 ah.

雖罔她知 ka-tī 已經是寡婦, 聽講她拒絕離開修道院, mā 毋出家做修女. 過無久, 她得著消息, 知影 Lothario 戰死 tī Naples 王國, he 是一場由 M. de Lautrec kap  Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordova 大元帥 ê 戰鬥. 知影了後, Camilla 決定出家做修女, 無久了後, 她 mā 過身, 因為過度 ê 悲傷 kap 鬱卒. Che tō 是 chit 3 人 ê 結局, 一切 lóng 是起頭 tī 一个失策 ê 好奇.

"我佮意這个小說," 神父講, "但我無相信 che 是真實 ê 故事. 設使 che 是虛構 ê 故事, 作者 ê 設計 mā 有欠點, 因為咱真僫想像, 世間汰有像 Anselmo 彼款戇翁, 譀古 kah 想欲做這種貴 som-som ê 實驗. 這種代誌若發生 tī 契兄 kap hóe-kì 中間, 猶閣講 ē 過. 但若 tī 翁某中間, 代誌 tō 無可能. M̄-koh, 若講著故事描寫 ê 手路, he 我 tō bô thang kā 嫌 ah lah."

35.4

The citizen replied, /

“The strangest that have been heard for many a day; for it is reported abroad that Lothario, the great friend of the wealthy Anselmo, who lived at San Giovanni, carried off last night Camilla, the wife of Anselmo, who also has disappeared. All this has been told by a maid-servant of Camilla’s, whom the governor found last night lowering herself by a sheet from the windows of Anselmo’s house. I know not indeed, precisely, how the affair came to pass; all I know is that the whole city is wondering at the occurrence, for no one could have expected a thing of the kind, seeing the great and intimate friendship that existed between them, so great, they say, that they were called ‘The Two Friends.’”

“Is it known at all,” said Anselmo, “what road Lothario and Camilla took?”

“Not in the least,” said the citizen, “though the governor has been very active in searching for them.”

“God speed you, señor,” said Anselmo.

“God be with you,” said the citizen and went his way.

This disastrous intelligence almost robbed Anselmo not only of his senses but of his life. He got up as well as he was able and reached the house of his friend, who as yet knew nothing of his misfortune, but seeing him come pale, worn, and haggard, perceived that he was suffering some heavy affliction. Anselmo at once begged to be allowed to retire to rest, and to be given writing materials. His wish was complied with and he was left lying down and alone, for he desired this, and even that the door should be locked. /

Finding himself alone he so took to heart the thought of his misfortune that by the signs of death he felt within him he knew well his life was drawing to a close, and therefore he resolved to leave behind him a declaration of the cause of his strange end. He began to write, but before he had put down all he meant to say, his breath failed him and he yielded up his life, a victim to the suffering which his ill-advised curiosity had entailed upon him. /

The master of the house observing that it was now late and that Anselmo did not call, determined to go in and ascertain if his indisposition was increasing, and found him lying on his face, his body partly in the bed, partly on the writing-table, on which he lay with the written paper open and the pen still in his hand. /

Having first called to him without receiving any answer, his host approached him, and taking him by the hand, found that it was cold, and saw that he was dead. Greatly surprised and distressed he summoned the household to witness the sad fate which had befallen Anselmo; and then he read the paper, the handwriting of which he recognised as his, and which contained these words:

“A foolish and ill-advised desire has robbed me of life. If the news of my death should reach the ears of Camilla, let her know that I forgive her, for she was not bound to perform miracles, nor ought I to have required her to perform them; and since I have been the author of my own dishonour, there is no reason why—”

So far Anselmo had written, and thus it was plain that at this point, before he could finish what he had to say, his life came to an end. The next day his friend sent intelligence of his death to his relatives, who had already ascertained his misfortune, as well as the convent where Camilla lay almost on the point of accompanying her husband on that inevitable journey, not on account of the tidings of his death, but because of those she received of her lover’s departure. /

Although she saw herself a widow, it is said she refused either to quit the convent or take the veil, until, not long afterwards, intelligence reached her that Lothario had been killed in a battle in which M. de Lautrec had been recently engaged with the Great Captain Gonzalo Fernandez de Cordova in the kingdom of Naples, whither her too late repentant lover had repaired. On learning this Camilla took the veil, and shortly afterwards died, worn out by grief and melancholy. This was the end of all three, an end that came of a thoughtless beginning.

“I like this novel,” said the curate; “but I cannot persuade myself of its truth; and if it has been invented, the author’s invention is faulty, for it is impossible to imagine any husband so foolish as to try such a costly experiment as Anselmo’s. If it had been represented as occurring between a gallant and his mistress it might pass; but between husband and wife there is something of an impossibility about it. As to the way in which the story is told, however, I have no fault to find.”
