"I tiāⁿ-tio̍h sī kóng ‘Don Quixote’ lah, sió-chiá," Sancho thiaⁿ kàu chia, sûi chhap-ōe, "i ê phian-miâ kiò chò Khó͘-koe-bīn Khî-sū." 

"Tō sī he," Dorothea kóng, "i koh kóng, chit-ūi khî-sū sin-châi koân-tōa, bīn-māu sán-thiu. Lēng-gōa, tī i tò-pêng keng-kah-thâu ē-bīn ê chiàⁿ-pêng, a̍h hit-tah hia, ū chi̍t-lia̍p phú-sek ê kì, hoat ê mo͘ ngē kah ná chang."

Thiaⁿ-tio̍h che, Don Quixoge kā sū-chiông kóng, "chia, Sancho koai gín-á, tàu kha-chhiú chi̍t-ē, pang góa thǹg-saⁿ, khòaⁿ góa sī m̄-sī hit-ūi sian-ti kok-ông só͘ kóng ê hit-ê khî-sū."

"Koh-hā thǹg-saⁿ boeh chhòng-siáⁿ?" Dorothea mn̄g.

"Khòaⁿ góa kám ū lín lāu-pē só͘ kóng ê hit-lia̍p kì." Don Quixote hôe-tap.

"Bô su-iàu thǹg-saⁿ lah," Sancho kóng, "in-ūi góa chai-iáⁿ koh-hā tī io-chiah-kut tiong-ng hia tú-hó ū chi̍t-lia̍p kì, he sī ióng-chòng ê kì-hō."

"Án-ne tō ū-kàu ah lah," Dorothea kóng, "pêng-iú tiong-kan bián siuⁿ kè-kàu, m̄-koán sī tī keng-kah-thâu, a̍h tī io-chiah-kut lóng ē-sái lah. "Tān-sī sió-chiá, lí ná ē tī Osuna chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ?" Don Quixote mn̄g, "hia pēng m̄-sī hái-káng neh."

M̄-koh, tī Dorothea khui-chhùi chìn-chêng, sîn-hū tō chhap-chhùi kóng:

"Kong-chú ê ì-sù sī kóng, tī Malaga chiūⁿ-hōaⁿ liáu-āu, yi siōng tāi-seng thiaⁿ tio̍h koh-hā tōa-miâ ê só͘-chāi, sī tī Osuna."

"Góa ê ì-sù tō sī án-ne. Tioh!" Dorothea kóng.

"He sī kài chū-jiân ê tāi-chì," sîn-hū kóng, "chhiáⁿ tiān-hā kè-sio̍k kóng lo̍h-khì."

"He 是事實," 姑娘講, "毋過我認為, 自 chia 開始, 我無需要任何提醒, tō ē-tàng 順利 kā 我 ê 真實故事講出來 ah. 我 ê 父王叫做智者 Tinacrio, 精通所謂 ê 魔法. Kō͘ 彼个技術, 伊了解, 我 ê 母后, its Jaramilla王后, ē 代先伊死, 然後過無久伊 mā ē 離開世間, 我 tō ē 成做無爸無母 ê 孤兒.

"但是, 伊講, 一切 chiah-ê 無 hō͘ 伊 hiah-nī 悲傷 a̍h 煩惱, 顛倒比袂起伊所知 ê 另外一項代誌. 伊講, 有一个超級大巨人, 叫做斜目 Pandafilando, 是 óa 阮王國 ê 一个大島 ê 領主. 聽講, 伊 ê 目睭雖罔生正正, 但伊看物件 ê 時, 目睭斜斜, 袂輸 teh kâng gîn, 引人著驚, 恐怖. 阮老爸講, 伊知影, 這个巨人 tī 知影我 ê 孤兒身份了後, ē 𤆬大兵馬來佔我 ê 王國, 奪走我 ê 一切, 連一个小庄跤 to 毋留 hō͘ 我蹛. 但, 如果我願意嫁 hō͘ 伊, tō ē-tàng 避免所有 chiah-ê 毀滅 kap 不幸.

"不而過, 阮老爸認為, 我無可能同意這款無四配 ê 婚姻. 伊講了真著, 因為我從來 m̄-bat 想欲嫁 hō͘ 彼个巨人, a̍h 其他巨人, 毋管伊偌偉大, 偌大 phiāng.

"阮老爸 koh 講, 等伊死了, 我看著 Pandafilando 得欲入侵我 ê 王國, 我 m̄-thang 等待, m̄-thang 試欲自衛, he ē 造成 tùi 我 ê 毀滅. 我若欲避免善良, 忠誠 ê 子民遭受死亡 kap 毀滅, 著 kā 王國完全開放 hō͘ 伊, 因為無可能保護 ka-tī 去對抗巨人 he 邪惡 ê 勢力. 我著即時 kap 幾个隨從走去 Sepanga, tī hia 揣某一个遊俠騎士來解脫我 ê 苦難. 彼个騎士 ê 大名到彼時應該已經傳遍咱 ê 王國. 我若無記毋著, 伊 ê 名應該是 Don Azote a̍h Don Gigote."

"伊定著是講 ‘Don Quixote’ lah, 小姐," Sancho 聽到 chia, 隨插話, "伊 ê 偏名叫做苦瓜面騎士." 

"Tō 是 he," Dorothea 講, "伊 koh 講, chit 位騎士身材懸大, 面貌瘦抽. 另外, tī 伊倒爿肩胛頭下面 ê 正爿, a̍h 彼搭 hia, 有一粒殕色 ê 痣, 發 ê 毛硬 kah ná 棕."

聽著 che, Don Quixoge kā 侍從講, "chia, Sancho 乖囡仔, 鬥跤手一下, pang 我褪衫, 看我是毋是彼位先知國王所講 ê 彼个騎士."

"閣下褪衫欲創啥?" Dorothea 問.

"看我 kám 有恁老爸所講 ê hit 粒痣." Don Quixote 回答.

"無需要褪衫 lah," Sancho 講, "因為我知影閣下 tī 腰脊骨中央 hia 拄好有一粒痣, he 是勇壯 ê 記號."

"Án-ne tō 有夠 ah lah," Dorothea 講, "朋友中間免 siuⁿ 計較, 毋管是 tī 肩胛頭, a̍h tī 腰脊骨 lóng ē-sái lah. 有一粒痣 tō 有夠 ah lah, 管伊是 tī 佗位, lóng mā tī 仝領皮頂面. 無疑, 阮老爸逐項細節 lóng 講 kah 真準, 我 mā 真好運, 揣著 Don Quixote kā 我救助. 因為阮老爸提起 ê tō 是伊, 伊 ê 面貌 kap 彼个出名騎士 ê 真鬥搭, he 名聲毋但流傳 tī Sepanga, koh-khah tī 規个 La Mancha. 我拄拄到 Osuna 上岸 ê 時, tō 聽人講起伊 ê 種種事蹟, 我 ê 心即刻 kā 我講, che tō 是我所欲揣 ê 人 lah."

"但是小姐, 你那會 tī Osuna 上岸?" Don Quixote 問, "hia 並毋是海港 neh."

M̄-koh, tī Dorothea 開喙進前, 神父 tō 插喙講:

"公主 ê 意思是講, tī Malaga上岸了後, 她上代先聽著閣下大名 ê 所在, 是 tī Osuna."

"我 ê 意思 tō 是 án-ne. 著!" Dorothea 講.

"He是 kài 自然 ê 代誌," 神父講, "請殿下繼續講落去."

“That is the truth,” said the damsel; “but I think from this on I shall have no need of any prompting, and I shall bring my true story safe into port, and here it is. The king my father, who was called Tinacrio the Sapient, was very learned in what they call magic arts, and became aware by his craft that my mother, who was called Queen Jaramilla, was to die before he did, and that soon after he too was to depart this life, and I was to be left an orphan without father or mother. /

But all this, he declared, did not so much grieve or distress him as his certain knowledge that a prodigious giant, the lord of a great island close to our kingdom, Pandafilando of the Scowl by name—for it is averred that, though his eyes are properly placed and straight, he always looks askew as if he squinted, and this he does out of malignity, to strike fear and terror into those he looks at—that he knew, I say, that this giant on becoming aware of my orphan condition would overrun my kingdom with a mighty force and strip me of all, not leaving me even a small village to shelter me; but that I could avoid all this ruin and misfortune if I were willing to marry him; /

however, as far as he could see, he never expected that I would consent to a marriage so unequal; and he said no more than the truth in this, for it has never entered my mind to marry that giant, or any other, let him be ever so great or enormous. /

My father said, too, that when he was dead, and I saw Pandafilando about to invade my kingdom, I was not to wait and attempt to defend myself, for that would be destructive to me, but that I should leave the kingdom entirely open to him if I wished to avoid the death and total destruction of my good and loyal vassals, for there would be no possibility of defending myself against the giant’s devilish power; and that I should at once with some of my followers set out for Spain, where I should obtain relief in my distress on finding a certain knight-errant whose fame by that time would extend over the whole kingdom, and who would be called, if I remember rightly, Don Azote or Don Gigote.”

“‘Don Quixote,’ he must have said, señora,” observed Sancho at this, “otherwise called the Knight of the Rueful Countenance.”

“That is it,” said Dorothea; “he said, moreover, that he would be tall of stature and lank featured; and that on his right side under the left shoulder, or thereabouts, he would have a grey mole with hairs like bristles.”

On hearing this, Don Quixote said to his squire, “Here, Sancho my son, bear a hand and help me to strip, for I want to see if I am the knight that sage king foretold.”

“What does your worship want to strip for?” said Dorothea.

“To see if I have that mole your father spoke of,” answered Don Quixote.

“There is no occasion to strip,” said Sancho; “for I know your worship has just such a mole on the middle of your backbone, which is the mark of a strong man.”

“That is enough,” said Dorothea, “for with friends we must not look too closely into trifles; and whether it be on the shoulder or on the backbone matters little; it is enough if there is a mole, be it where it may, for it is all the same flesh; no doubt my good father hit the truth in every particular, and I have made a lucky hit in commending myself to Don Quixote; for he is the one my father spoke of, as the features of his countenance correspond with those assigned to this knight by that wide fame he has acquired not only in Spain but in all La Mancha; for I had scarcely landed at Osuna when I heard such accounts of his achievements, that at once my heart told me he was the very one I had come in search of.”

“But how did you land at Osuna, señora,” asked Don Quixote, “when it is not a seaport?”

But before Dorothea could reply the curate anticipated her, saying, /

“The princess meant to say that after she had landed at Malaga the first place where she heard of your worship was Osuna.”

“That is what I meant to say,” said Dorothea.

“And that would be only natural,” said the curate. “Will your majesty please proceed?”
