22.2 O͘-kui-thâu m̄-sī kán-tan ê hâng-gia̍p

"Tī chia, he koh tian-tò-péng," chûn-lô͘ kóng, "chhiùⁿ chi̍t-pái, khàu chi̍t sì-lâng."

"Góa bē bêng-pe̍k," Don Quixote kóng. 

M̄-koh, chi̍t-ê ūi-peng kā i kóng: 

"Sian-siⁿ, tùi chò-pháiⁿ ê lâng lâi kóng, siū-khó͘ tang-tiong chhiùⁿ-koa, ì-sù sī, tī siū-hêng ê sî jīn-chōe. In tùi chit-ê chōe-hoān iōng-hêng, i chiah jīn-chōe, i hoān-tio̍h thau khan gû a̍h khan bé ê chōe. In-ūi i jīn-chōe, in phòaⁿ i chò chûn-lô͘ 6-nî, lēng-gōa i í-keng hông tī kha-chiah-phiaⁿ sut 200-ē. Chāi góa khòaⁿ, in kóng-ê kài ū tō-lí."

"Góa mā sī án-ne siūⁿ," Don Quixote hôe-tap. Jiân-āu, i kiâⁿ kàu tē-3 lâng, mn̄g kap kî-thaⁿ lâng kāng-khoán ê būn-tê. Hit-lâng chek-khek sóng-khoài hôe-tap:

"Góa in-ūi khiàm lâng 10 ducat (kim-pè), tio̍h tiàm tōa-chûn seng-oa̍h 5-nî."

Don Quixote kiâⁿ kàu tē-4 lâng bīn-chêng, hit-lâng piáu-chêng chun-kùi, chhùi-chhiu tn̂g kàu heng-chêng, thiaⁿ-tio̍h ū-lâng mn̄g i ná-ē lâi kàu chia, bô-kóng bô-tàⁿ khai-sí khàu. M̄-koh tē-5 ê lâng thè i hoat-siaⁿ, án-ne kóng:

"Chit-ê ta̍t-tit chun-kèng ê lâng boeh chiūⁿ-chûn 4-nî, lâi chìn-chêng koh tio̍h chē tī bé téng se̍h-ke."

"Iā  tō sī," Sancho Panza kóng, "chiū góa só͘ chai, hō͘ i tī chèng-lâng bīn-chêng sit-bīn-chú."

" tō sī án-ne," hit-ê chûn-lô͘ ìn, "hō͘ i chit-ê chhù-hoa̍t ê chōe-miâ sī i chò khan-káu, m̄-tio̍h, sī khan-kâu ê tāi-chì. Kán-tan kóng, chit-ūi sin-sū sī chia̍h nńg-pn̄g--ê, jî-chhiáⁿ i koh sió-khóa ē-hiáu hoat-su̍t."

"Nā mài sǹg hit-ê hoat-su̍t," Don Quixote kóng, "kan-ta in-ūi khan-kâu, bô eng-kai phòaⁿ i khì kò-chûn, tian-tò tio̍h hō͘ i chò chûn-tūi ê chí-hui, chò tūi-tiúⁿ. In-ūi o͘-kui-thâu m̄-sī kán-tan ê hâng-gia̍p, tio̍h ū hó ê phòaⁿ-toàn, sī tī-lí kok-ka só͘ su-iàu ê jîn-châi, mā tio̍h ài ū hó ê chhut-sin. Lēng-gōa, kap kî-thaⁿ hâng-gia̍p kāng-khoán, tio̍h ū-lâng kiám-cha kap kàm-tok, mā chhiūⁿ chhī-tiûⁿ tiong-lâng kāng-khoán, tio̍h hān-tiāⁿ lâng-sò͘. Án-ne tō ē-tàng pī-bián chit-ê hâng-gia̍p in-ūi lak tī hàu-tai koh bû-ti ê lâng ê chhiú-tiong só͘ sán-seng ê pè-toan: chhin-chhiūⁿ kóng, sam-pat cha-bó͘, cha̍p-chhe-á, chhài-chiáu-á, tī siōng kín-kip ê sî-khek, tī su-iàu chhòng-ì, khiáu-su ê sî-chūn, chóng-sī sit chú-ì, bē tiāⁿ-tio̍h, liân chiàⁿ-chhiú tó chi̍t-ki to sa-bô.

"Góa ē-sái kóng khah hn̄g leh, the̍h lí-iû lâi soeh-bêng, kok-ka tio̍h soán lâng lâi tam-jīm chiah-nī su-iàu ê chit-bū, tān chia m̄-sī sek-ha̍p kóng che ê só͘-chāi. Kàu-sî, góa chiah kā chit-ê tāi-chì kóng hō͘ ē-tit liáu-kái koh kái-koat ê lâng thiaⁿ. Góa taⁿ boeh kóng ê sī, in-ūi koh sī hoat-su chit-ê sū-si̍t, hō͘ góa bô koh m̄-kam i thâu-chang pe̍h chhang-chhang, bīn-māu chun-kùi, soah in-ūi khan-kâu-á hāi i lo̍h kàu chit-ê tē-pō͘. Sui-bóng góa chai, sè-kan m̄-sī chhiūⁿ it-poaⁿ lâng siūⁿ ê án-ne, ū hoat-su̍t ē-tàng iô-tāng a̍h kái-piàn lâng ê ì-chì. In-ūi lán-lâng ê ì-chì sī chū-iû ê, bô siáⁿ bê-io̍h a̍h hû-á ē-tit kiông-pek i. It-chhè hiah-ê sam-pat cha-bó͘ a̍h pián-á só͘ chò ê, put-kò sī kō͘ io̍h-chúi a̍h to̍k-phín hāi lâng khí-kông, ké-kúi kóng in ū lêng-le̍k ín-khí ài-chêng. Sū-si̍t sī, ná góa kóng ê, kiông-pek ì-chì sī bô khó-lêng."

22.2 O͘-kui-thâu 毋是簡單 ê 行業

"Tī chia, he koh 顛倒反," 船奴講, "唱一擺, 哭一世人."

"我袂明白," Don Quixote 講. 

M̄-koh, 一个衛兵 kā 伊講: 

"先生, tùi 做歹 ê 人來講, 受苦當中唱歌, 意思是, tī 受刑 ê 時認罪. In tùi 這个罪犯用刑, 伊才認罪, 伊犯著偷牽牛 a̍h 牽馬 ê 罪. 因為伊認罪, in 判伊做船奴 6 年, 另外伊已經 hông tī 尻脊骿 sut 200 下. 伊總是失志 koh 凊心, 因為其他 ê 賊, 毋管是 tī 後面 a̍h tī chia 行 ê, lóng 愛欺負, 冷落, 作弄, a̍h 輕視伊, 講伊小可 tō 認罪, 無勇氣莫認罪. 因為 in 講, 認罪 kap 毋認罪仝款是一句話. 知情 ê 罪犯知影, 生死在 tī ka-tī ê 喙, 毋是證人 a̍h 證據. 在我看, in 講 ê kài 有道理."

"我 mā 是 án-ne 想," Don Quixote 回答. 然後, 伊行到第 3 人, 問 kap 其他人仝款 ê 問題. Hit 人即刻爽快回答:

"我因為欠人 10 ducat (金幣), tio̍h 踮大船生活 5 年."

"我願意送你 20 ducat, hō͘ 你解脫這个苦難," Don Quixote 講.

"Án-ne seⁿ," 船奴講, "袂輸人 tī 海上有錢, soah 枵 kah欲死, 因為買無伊需要 ê 物件. 我 án-ne 講, 假使我 tī 正確 ê 時間有閣下這陣 hō͘ 我 ê 20 ducat, 彼時我 tio̍h ē-sái 買收書記員, koh o͘-se 檢察官, 這時我 tō ē-tàng 留 tī Toledo ê Zocodover 廣場, 免 hông ná 獵狗 án-ne 縛著行這條路. M̄-koh, 神 kài 偉大. 著有耐心 -- 啥 to 免 koh 講 ah."

Don Quixote 行到第 4 人面前, hit 人表情尊貴, 喙鬚長到胸前, 聽著有人問伊那會來到 chia, 無講無呾開始哭. M̄-koh 第 5 个人替伊發聲, án-ne 講:

"這个值得尊敬 ê 人欲上船 4 年, 來進前 koh tio̍h 坐 tī 馬頂踅街."

"也 tō 是," Sancho Panza 講, "就我所知, hō͘ 伊 tī 眾人面前失面子."

"Tō 是 án-ne," 彼个船奴應, " hō͘ 伊這个處罰 ê 罪名是伊做牽狗, 毋著, 是牽猴 ê 代誌. 簡單講, 這位紳士是食軟飯 ê, 而且伊 koh 小可 ē-hiáu 法術."

"若莫算彼个法術," Don Quixote 講, "kan-ta 因為牽猴, 無應該判伊去划船, 顛倒 tio̍h hō͘ 伊做船隊 ê 指揮, 做隊長. 因為 o͘-kui-thâu 毋是簡單 ê 行業, tio̍h 有好 ê 判斷, 是治理國家所需要 ê 人才, mā tio̍h 愛有好 ê 出身. 另外, kap 其他行業仝款, tio̍h 有人檢查 kap 監督, mā 像市場中人仝款, tio̍h 限定人數. Án-ne tō ē-tàng 避免這个行業因為 lak tī 孝呆 koh 無知 ê 人 ê 手中所產生 ê 弊端: 親像講, 三八查某, 雜差仔, 菜鳥仔, tī 上緊急 ê 時刻, tī 需要創意, 巧思 ê 時陣, 總是失主意, 袂定著, 連正手佗一支 to 捎無.

"我會使講較遠 leh, 提理由來說明, 國家 tio̍h 選人來擔任 chiah-nī 需要 ê 職務, 但 chia 毋是適合講 che ê 所在. 到時, 我才 kā 這个代誌講 hō͘ ē-tit了解 koh 解決 ê 人聽. 我今欲講 ê 是, 因為 koh 是法師這个事實, hō͘ 我無 koh 毋甘伊頭鬃白 chhang-chhang, 面貌尊貴, soah 因為牽猴仔害伊落到這个地步. 雖罔我知, 世間毋是像一般人想 ê án-ne, 有法術 ē-tàng 搖動 a̍h 改變人 ê 意志. 因為咱人 ê 意志是自由 ê, 無啥迷藥 a̍h 符仔 ē-tit 強迫伊. 一切 hiah-ê 三八查某 a̍h 諞仔所做 ê, 不過是 kō͘ 藥水 a̍h 毒品害人起狂, 假鬼講 in 有能力引起愛情. 事實是, ná 我講 ê, 強迫意志是無可能."

22.2

“Here it is the reverse,” said the galley slave; “for he who sings once weeps all his life.”

“I do not understand it,” said Don Quixote; /

but one of the guards said to him, /

“Sir, to sing under suffering means with the non sancta fraternity to confess under torture; they put this sinner to the torture and he confessed his crime, which was being a cuatrero, that is a cattle-stealer, and on his confession they sentenced him to six years in the galleys, besides two hundred lashes that he has already had on the back; and he is always dejected and downcast because the other thieves that were left behind and that march here ill-treat, and snub, and jeer, and despise him for confessing and not having spirit enough to say nay; for, say they, ‘nay’ has no more letters in it than ‘yea,’ and a culprit is well off when life or death with him depends on his own tongue and not on that of witnesses or evidence; and to my thinking they are not very far out.”

“And I think so too,” answered Don Quixote; then passing on to the third he asked him what he had asked the others, and the man answered very readily and unconcernedly, “I am going for five years to their ladyships the gurapas for the want of ten ducats.”

“I will give twenty with pleasure to get you out of that trouble,” said Don Quixote.

“That,” said the galley slave, “is like a man having money at sea when he is dying of hunger and has no way of buying what he wants; I say so because if at the right time I had had those twenty ducats that your worship now offers me, I would have greased the notary’s pen and freshened up the attorney’s wit with them, so that to-day I should be in the middle of the plaza of the Zocodover at Toledo, and not on this road coupled like a greyhound. But God is great; patience—there, that’s enough of it.”

Don Quixote passed on to the fourth, a man of venerable aspect with a white beard falling below his breast, who on hearing himself asked the reason of his being there began to weep without answering a word, but the fifth acted as his tongue and said, /

“This worthy man is going to the galleys for four years, after having gone the rounds in ceremony and on horseback.”

“That means,” said Sancho Panza, “as I take it, to have been exposed to shame in public.”

“Just so,” replied the galley slave, “and the offence for which they gave him that punishment was having been an ear-broker, nay body-broker; I mean, in short, that this gentleman goes as a pimp, and for having besides a certain touch of the sorcerer about him.”

“If that touch had not been thrown in,” said Don Quixote, “he would not deserve, for mere pimping, to row in the galleys, but rather to command and be admiral of them; for the office of pimp is no ordinary one, being the office of persons of discretion, one very necessary in a well-ordered state, and only to be exercised by persons of good birth; nay, there ought to be an inspector and overseer of them, as in other offices, and recognised number, as with the brokers on change; in this way many of the evils would be avoided which are caused by this office and calling being in the hands of stupid and ignorant people, such as women more or less silly, and pages and jesters of little standing and experience, who on the most urgent occasions, and when ingenuity of contrivance is needed, let the crumbs freeze on the way to their mouths, and know not which is their right hand. /

I should like to go farther, and give reasons to show that it is advisable to choose those who are to hold so necessary an office in the state, but this is not the fit place for it; some day I will expound the matter to someone able to see to and rectify it; all I say now is, that the additional fact of his being a sorcerer has removed the sorrow it gave me to see these white hairs and this venerable countenance in so painful a position on account of his being a pimp; though I know well there are no sorceries in the world that can move or compel the will as some simple folk fancy, for our will is free, nor is there herb or charm that can force it. All that certain silly women and quacks do is to turn men mad with potions and poisons, pretending that


they have power to cause love, for, as I say, it is an impossibility to compel the will.”
