"Ambrosio, góa lâi chia ê bo̍k-tek, m̄-sī ūi-tio̍h lí só͘ kóng ê tāi-chì," Marcela kā ìn, "sī boeh ūi ka-tī piān-hō͘, boeh chèng-bêng hiah-ê in-ūi in ê pi-siong kap in-ūi Chrysostom ê sí-bông chek-pī góa ê lâng sī gōa-nī bô-lí. Só͘-tì, góa chhiáⁿ chāi-tiûⁿ ê kok-ūi chù-ì thiaⁿ góa kóng, che m̄-bián gōa-chē sî-kan, bián gōa-chē ōe, bêng-pe̍k ê lâng tō chai sū-si̍t sī án-chóaⁿ. Lēng-gōa, ài súi mi̍h ê lâng ū khó-lêng seⁿ-chò bái, bái tō ē hō͘ lâng thó-ià, só͘-í, ‘góa ài lí in-ūi lí súi, lí tio̍h ài góa sui-bóng góa bái,’ che sī chin hàm-kó͘ ê kóng-hoat. 

"Tō kóng, siang-hong pêⁿ súi, mā bô piáu-sī nn̄g-lâng ê sèng-chêng it-tēng kāng-khoán, in-ūi, m̄-sī súi lóng ē ín-khí ài-chêng, ū-ê súi chí-sī siâⁿ lâng ba̍k-chiu, pēng bô sán-seng kám-chêng. Ká-sú kok-chióng súi lóng sán-seng ài koh kám-tōng sim, lâng ê ì-chì tō ē iô-tāng bē-tiāⁿ, m̄-chai án-chóaⁿ soán-te̍k chiah hó. In-ūi ū bô-sò͘ ê súi mi̍h, tō ē ū bô-sò͘ ê ài-bō͘, tān-sī góa thiaⁿ-kóng, chin ài sī ûi-it, sī chū-goān, m̄-sī kiông-pek ê. "Chrysostom ê 哀歌" 得著聽眾 ê o-ló, m̄-koh 讀 ê 人講, 在伊看, che kap 伊聽著 ê 有關 Marcela ê 保守 kap 氣質無 ha̍h, 因為 Chrysostom tī chia 埋怨目赤, 懷疑, kap 分離, chiâu 是 tùi 好名聲 ê Marcela ê 偏見. Ambrosio kài 清楚 in 朋友心內 ê 想法, 聽著 che tō kā 應:

"先生, 為著消除懷疑, 我 tio̍h kā 你講, tī 這个不幸 ê 人寫 che ê 時, 伊已經離開 Marcela, 是伊 ka-tī 欲離開, 看 kám 會堪得分離. M̄-koh, tō ná 失戀 ê 人 tùi 事事項項 to 鬱卒, 驚惶, 空想 ê 目赤 kap 懷疑, 也害 Chrysostom kā he tòng 真, 受 he 困擾. 所致, 有關 Marcela ê 美德 ê 報導是堅固 ê 事實, 甚至目赤這項 to 無應該, mā 無任何她 ê 過錯, 除了她小可殘忍, 激氣, 看人無."

"無毋著," Vivaldo 講. 伊拄欲 koh 讀另篇伊保留免燒 ê 文稿 ê 時, 意外出現 tī 眼前 ê 一个奇妙景象 hō͘ 伊擋恬. 因為, in teh 挖墓 ê hit 粒石頭頂, tī hia 出現看羊查某 Marcela, hiah-nī 媠, 比傳說 ê koh-khah 媠. 到彼時才看著她 ê 人, 看 kah gāng-gāng, 恬恬, 連慣勢看著她 ê 人 mā 仝款 gông-ngia̍h. M̄-koh, Ambrosio 一下看著她, tō 顯示憤慨, tùi 她講:

"惡毒 ê 山區蛇妖, 你是拄好到 chia, 欲看 hō͘ 你殘忍害死 ê 這个可憐人 ê 空喙 kám 有流血, a̍h 是為著你 ê 殘酷行為感覺歡喜才來 chia? A̍h 是, 你是另一个無情 ê Nero, 欲 ùi 懸向低看 Roma hō͘ 火毀滅? A̍h 是, kō͘ 你 ê 傲慢, 欲來 thùn 踏 che 不幸 ê 身屍, ná 像 Tarquin ê 忤逆查某囝 thùn 踏姻老爸 ê 身屍 án-ne? 緊講, 你是按怎來 chia, a̍h 是你欲創啥, 因為我了解 Chrysostom, 在生伊總是順從你, 雖罔伊已經死, 我 mā ē 叫 chiah-ê 自稱是 in 朋友 ê 人順從你 ê 意思."

"Ambrosio, 我來 chia ê 目的, 毋是為著你所講 ê 代誌," Marcela kā 應, "是欲為 ka-tī 辯護, 欲證明 hiah-ê 因為 in ê 悲傷 kap 因為 Chrysostom ê 死亡責備我 ê 人是 gōa-nī 無理. 所致, 我請在場 ê 各位注意聽我講, che 毋免 gōa-chē 時間, 免 gōa-chē 話, 明白 ê 人 tō 知事實是按怎. 天公 hō͘ 我生做恁所講 ê hiah 媠, 媠 kah hō͘ 恁愛我. 因為恁愛我, 恁 tō 講, 甚至督促, 我 tio̍h 愛恁. 就神 hō͘ 我 ê 理解, 我知, 媠 ê mi̍h 引人愛, 但我袂當了解, 因為媠被愛 ê mi̍h, 是按怎 tio̍h 愛愛伊 ê 人. 另外, 愛媠 mi̍h ê 人有可能生做䆀, 䆀 tō ē hō͘ 人討厭, 所以, ‘我愛你因為你媠, 你 tio̍h 愛我雖罔我䆀,’ che 是真 hàm-kó͘ ê 講法. 

"Tō 講, 雙方平媠, mā 無表示兩人 ê 性情一定仝款, 因為, 毋是媠 lóng ē 引起愛情, 有 ê 媠只是唌人目睭, 並無產生感情. 假使各種媠 lóng 產生愛 koh 感動心, 人 ê 意志 tō ē 搖動袂定, 毋知按怎選擇才好. 因為有無數 ê 媠 mi̍h, tō ē 有無數 ê 愛慕, 但是我聽講, 真愛是唯一, 是自願, 毋是強迫 ê. 代誌若 án-ne, 我 mā 相信是 án-ne, 是按怎恁欲強迫我違背我 ê 意志, 唯一 ê 理由是因為恁講恁愛我? 反倒轉, 請問, 假使天公 hō͘ 我生做䆀, tō ná 像伊 hō͘ 我生做媠 án-ne, 我 kám 有權利埋怨恁無愛我?"

The “Lay of Chrysostom” met with the approbation of the listeners, though the reader said it did not seem to him to agree with what he had heard of Marcela’s reserve and propriety, for Chrysostom complained in it of jealousy, suspicion, and absence, all to the prejudice of the good name and fame of Marcela; to which Ambrosio replied as one who knew well his friend’s most secret thoughts, /

“Señor, to remove that doubt I should tell you that when the unhappy man wrote this lay he was away from Marcela, from whom he had voluntarily separated himself, to try if absence would act with him as it is wont; and as everything distresses and every fear haunts the banished lover, so imaginary jealousies and suspicions, dreaded as if they were true, tormented Chrysostom; and thus the truth of what report declares of the virtue of Marcela remains unshaken, and with her envy itself should not and cannot find any fault save that of being cruel, somewhat haughty, and very scornful.”

“That is true,” said Vivaldo; and as he was about to read another paper of those he had preserved from the fire, he was stopped by a marvellous vision (for such it seemed) that unexpectedly presented itself to their eyes; for on the summit of the rock where they were digging the grave there appeared the shepherdess Marcela, so beautiful that her beauty exceeded its reputation. Those who had never till then beheld her gazed upon her in wonder and silence, and those who were accustomed to see her were not less amazed than those who had never seen her before. But the instant Ambrosio saw her he addressed her, with manifest indignation:

“Art thou come, by chance, cruel basilisk of these mountains, to see if in thy presence blood will flow from the wounds of this wretched being thy cruelty has robbed of life; or is it to exult over the cruel work of thy humours that thou art come; or like another pitiless Nero to look down from that height upon the ruin of his Rome in embers; or in thy arrogance to trample on this ill-fated corpse, as the ungrateful daughter trampled on her father Tarquin’s? Tell us quickly for what thou art come, or what it is thou wouldst have, for, as I know the thoughts of Chrysostom never failed to obey thee in life, I will make all these who call themselves his friends obey thee, though he be dead.”

“I come not, Ambrosio for any of the purposes thou hast named,” replied Marcela, “but to defend myself and to prove how unreasonable are all those who blame me for their sorrow and for Chrysostom’s death; and therefore I ask all of you that are here to give me your attention, for it will not take much time or many words to bring the truth home to persons of sense. Heaven has made me, so you say, beautiful, and so much so that in spite of yourselves my beauty leads you to love me; and for the love you show me you say, and even urge, that I am bound to love you. By that natural understanding which God has given me I know that everything beautiful attracts love, but I cannot see how, by reason of being loved, that which is loved for its beauty is bound to love that which loves it; besides, it may happen that the lover of that which is beautiful may be ugly, and ugliness being detestable, it is very absurd to say, “I love thee because thou art beautiful, thou must love me though I be ugly.”/

But supposing the beauty equal on both sides, it does not follow that the inclinations must be therefore alike, for it is not every beauty that excites love, some but pleasing the eye without winning the affection; and if every sort of beauty excited love and won the heart, the will would wander vaguely to and fro unable to make choice of any; for as there is an infinity of beautiful objects there must be an infinity of inclinations, and true love, I have heard it said, is indivisible, and must be voluntary and not compelled. If this be so, as I believe it to be, why do you desire me to bend my will by force, for no other reason but that you say you love me? Nay—tell me—had Heaven made me ugly, as it has made me beautiful, could I with justice complain of you for not loving me? /
