4. Lī-khui kheh-chàn í-āu ê tāi-chì
4.1 Chò-sit-lâng kō͘ phôe-tòa sut gín-á
Don Quixote lī-khui kheh-chàn, thiⁿ tú phú-kng. Taⁿ i í-keng ū khî-sū miâ-hō, móa-sim hoaⁿ-hí, thiòng kah, sóng kah, kiông boeh piak phòa bé-an tòa. Put-jî-kò, siūⁿ-khí tiàm-chú khǹg i chhut-mn̂g tio̍h chah ê pit-su-phín, iû-kî sī chîⁿ kap saⁿ, i koat-tēng seng tńg-chhù kā khoán chiâu-chn̂g, sūn-sòa chhōe chi̍t-ê sū-chiông. I phah-sǹg boeh chhōa chi̍t-ê chò-sit-lâng, sī in chhù-piⁿ, ū ka-têng ê sàn-chhiah-lâng, chin sek-ha̍p chò khî-sū ê sū-chiông. Siūⁿ kàu chia, i se̍h bé thâu hiòng ka-tī ê chng-thâu, Rocinante mā ē-jīn-tit lāu-chhù, tō khí-lōng, cháu kah ná poe.
Kiâⁿ bô kài hn̄g, i thiaⁿ tio̍h chiàⁿ-pêng cha̍p-chhiū-nâ ni̍h ū bî-jio̍k ê kiò-siaⁿ, ká-ná ū-lâng siū-lān. Chi̍t-ē thiaⁿ tio̍h he, i tō hoah-siaⁿ kóng:
"Kám-siā thiⁿ-kong chiàu-kò͘, hō͘ góa chiah kín tō ū ki-hoe chip-hêng góa ê gī-bū, si̍t-hiān góa ê goān-bōng. Che tek-khak sī su-iàu kiù-chō͘ ê cha-po͘ a̍h cha-bó͘ ê kiò-siaⁿ, i su-iàu góa ê pang-chō͘ kap pó-hō͘;" jiân-āu i oat-hiòng, se̍h Rocinante hiòng kiò-siaⁿ kiâⁿ khì.
Chìn-ji̍p chhiū-nâ kiâⁿ bô kúi-pō͘, i khòaⁿ tio̍h chi̍t-phit bé-bó pa̍k tī chi̍t-châng chhiūⁿ-bo̍k. Lēng-gōa chi̍t-châng chhiū téng pa̍k chi̍t-ê tāi-khài 15 hòe ê siàu-liân, téng-poaⁿ-sin bô chhēng-saⁿ, he sī i ê kiò-siaⁿ. I ai-kiò ê goân-in sī in-ūi chi̍t-ê ióng-chòng ê chò-sit-lâng kō͘ phôe-tòa teh kā sut, múi sut chi̍t-ē tō kā lé koh mē bô soah:
"Chhùi ha̍p khí-lâi, ba̍k-chiu peh-kim!"
Hit-ê gín-á án-ne kā ìn, kóng:
"Góa m̄-káⁿ ah lah, chú-lâng. Góa chiù-chōa, koh-lâi bē án-ne chò. Í-āu góa ē koh-khah sio-sim chiàu-kò͘ iûⁿ-á."
Khòaⁿ tio̍h chit-khoán chêng-hêng, Don Quixote tō hóe-tōa, kóng:

"Khî-sū Sià [Sir], góa teh chhú-hoa̍t chit-ê siàu-liân sī góa ê sin-lô, góa chhiàⁿ i lâi kò͘ iûⁿ. Á i chin chho͘-sim, ta̍k-kang phah m̄-kiàn iûⁿ. In-ūi i chho͘-sim, káu-koài, góa chhù-hoa̍t i, i soah kóng góa sī in-ūi tàng-sng, siūⁿ-boeh án-ne kō͘ khiàm i ê kang-chîⁿ tú-siàu. Kō͘ góa ê lêng-hûn hiòng thiⁿ chiù-chōa, i kóng pe̍h-chha̍t."
"O͘-pe̍h kóng, lí chit-ê pi-phí chng-kha lâng!" Don Quixote kóng, "Ji̍t-thâu chāi thiⁿ, góa chiok siūⁿ boeh kō͘ che tn̂g-chhiuⁿ chhiám lí. Ke-ōe bián kóng, sûi hù chîⁿ hō͘ i. Nā-bô, kō͘ Sîn ê miâ-gī, góa sûi kā lí kái-koat, hō͘ lí o͘-iú. Kín kā i pàng-khui."
Chò-sit-lâng thâu lê loeh, koh tiām-tiām tháu-khui sin-lô. Don Quixote mn̄g i, chú-lâng khiàm i gōa-chē.
I ìn kóng, 9 kò goe̍h, múi kò goe̍h 7 real. Don Quixote kā chîⁿ ke-ke leh, lóng-chóng 63 real, tō kā chò-sit-lâng kóng, nā bô-ài bô-miā, taⁿ sûi hù-chîⁿ.
Phi̍h-phi̍h chhoah ê chng-kha lâng kóng, i kō͘ sèⁿ-miā chiù-chōa, chóng-gia̍h bô hiah chē, in-ūi tio̍h koh khàu-tiāu i hō͘ i ê 3 siang ê-á, kap i phòa-pēⁿ ê sî nn̄g-pái pàng-hoeh ê chîⁿ.
"Án-ne mā chin hó," Don Quixote kóng, "tō kā ê-á kap pàng-hoeh ê chîⁿ the̍h lâi kap lí bô-tiā bô-chì phah i sio tú-siàu. Tō-kóng i chhēng phòa lí bé ê ê-á, lí mā siong tio̍h i sin-khu ê phôe ah. Tō-kóng i phòa-pēⁿ ê sî thì-thâu-sai kā i pàng-hoeh, taⁿ i bô pēⁿ lí mā hāi i lâu-hoeh. Án-ne kóng lâi, i bô khiàm lí siáⁿ."
"Khî-sū Sià, khùn-lân sī, góa tī chia bô chîⁿ. Kiò Andres tòe góa tńg-chhù lah, góa ē kā chîⁿ chiàu-si̍t hù hō͘ i."
"Góa tòe i tńg?" siàu-liân lâng kóng. "M̄-lah, Thiⁿ-kong pó-pì! M̄, Sian-siⁿ, góa m̄. It-tàn tan-to̍k kap góa chò-hóe, i tō ē chhin-chhiūⁿ tùi-thāi Saint Bartholomew án-ne pak góa ê phôe."
"I bē chò hit-khoán tāi-chì lah," Don Quixote kóng, "chí-iàu góa bēng-lēng, i tō ē thiaⁿ-ōe. Kì-jiân i í-keng kō͘ khî-sū sin-hūn tùi góa chiù-chōa, góa chiah pàng i cháu, góa pó-chèng i ē hù-chîⁿ."
"Chiàu lí só͘ kóng, Sian-siⁿ," siàu-liân lâng kóng, "goán chú-lâng m̄-sī khî-sū lah, i mā bô jīm-hô khî-sū ê sin-hūn. In-ūi i sī Quintanar tē-hng ê Châi-chú, kìo Juan Haldudo."
"Che bô siáⁿ iàu-kín," Don Quixote ìn, "Haldudo ka-cho̍k mā ē-sái ū khî-sū, iû-kî sī, lâng ê phín-tek chāi tī i ê hêng-ûi (everyone is the son of his works)."

4. 離開客棧以後 ê 代誌
4.1 做穡人 kō͘ 皮帶 sut 囡仔
Don Quixote 離開客棧, 天 tú 殕光. 今伊已經有騎士名號, 滿心歡喜, 暢 kah, 爽 kah, 強欲 piak 破馬鞍帶. 不而過, 想起店主勸伊出門著扎 ê 必需品, 尤其是錢 kap 衫, 伊決定先轉厝 kā 款 chiâu-chn̂g, 順紲揣一个侍從. 伊拍算欲𤆬一个做穡人, 是 in 厝邊, 有家庭 ê 散赤人, 真適合做騎士 ê 侍從. 想到 chia, 伊踅馬頭向 ka-tī ê 庄頭, Rocinante mā ē 認得老厝, tō 起 lōng, 走 kah ná 飛.
行無 kài 遠, 伊聽著正爿雜樹林 ni̍h 有微弱 ê 叫聲, ká-ná 有人受難. 一下聽著 he, 伊 tō 喝聲講:
"感謝天公照顧, hō͘ 我 chiah 緊 tō 有機會執行我 ê 義務, 實現我 ê 願望. Che 的確是需要救助 ê 查埔 a̍h 查某 ê 叫聲, 伊需要我 ê 幫助 kap 保護;" 然後伊斡向, 踅 Rocinante 向叫聲行去.
進入樹林行無幾步, 伊看著一匹馬母縛 tī 一叢橡木. 另外一叢樹頂縛一个大概 15 歲 ê 少年, 頂半身無穿衫, he 是伊 ê 叫聲. 伊哀叫 ê 原因是因為一个勇壯 ê 做穡人 kō͘ 皮帶 teh kā sut, 每 sut 一下 tō kā lé koh 罵無煞:
"喙合起來, 目睭 peh-kim!"
彼个囡仔 án-ne kā ìn, 講:
"我 m̄-káⁿ ah lah, 主人. 我咒誓, koh-lâi 袂 án-ne 做. 以後我 ē koh-khah 小心照顧羊仔."
看著這款情形, Don Quixote tō 火大, 講:
"無禮 ê 騎士, 你 m̄-thang 攻擊袂當自衛 ê 人. 上你 ê 馬, 攑你 ê 槍" (因為縛馬母 hit 叢橡樹有 khòe 一支槍), "我欲教你知, 你 ê 行為是 su̍t-á 囝."
做穡人, 看著面前 chit 人全身盔甲, 攑長槍 lāng tī 伊頭殼頂, 驚 kah 欲死, 客客氣氣應話講:
"騎士 Sià [Sir], 我 teh 處罰這个少年是我 ê 辛勞, 我倩伊來顧羊. Á 伊真粗心, 逐工拍 m̄-kiàn 羊. 因為伊粗心, 狡怪, 我處罰伊, 伊煞講我是因為凍霜, 想欲 án-ne kō͘ 欠伊 ê 工錢拄數. Kō͘ 我 ê 靈魂向天咒誓, 伊講白賊."
"烏白講, 你這个卑鄙庄跤人!" Don Quixote 講, "日頭在天, 我足想欲 kō͘ che 長槍攕你. 加話免講, sûi 付錢 hō͘ 伊. 若無, kō͘ 神 ê 名義, 我 sûi kā 你解決, hō͘ 你烏有. 緊 kā 伊放開."
做穡人頭犁 loeh, koh 恬恬敨開辛勞. Don Quixote 問伊, 主人欠伊 gōa-chē.
伊 ìn 講, 9 個月, 每個月 7 real. Don Quixote kā 錢加加 leh, lóng 總 63 real, tō kā 做穡人講, 若無愛無命, 今 sûi 付錢.
Phi̍h-phi̍h chhoah ê 庄跤人講, 伊 kō͘ 性命咒誓, 總額無 hiah 濟, 因為著 koh 扣掉伊 hō͘ 伊 ê 3 雙鞋仔, kap 伊破病 ê 時兩擺放血 ê 錢.
"Án-ne mā 真好," Don Quixote 講, "tō kā 鞋仔 kap 放血 ê 錢提來 kap 你 bô-tiā bô-chì 拍伊 sio 拄數. Tō 講伊穿破你買 ê 鞋仔, 你 mā 傷著伊身軀 ê 皮 ah. Tō 講伊破病 ê 時剃頭師 kā 伊放血, 今伊無病你 mā 害伊流血. Án-ne 講來, 伊無欠你啥."
"騎士 Sià, 困難是, 我 tī chia 無錢. 叫 Andres 綴我轉厝 lah, 我 ē kā 錢照實付 hō͘ 伊."
"我綴伊轉?" 少年人講. "M̄-lah, 天公保庇! M̄, 先生, 我 m̄. 一旦單獨 kap 我做伙, 伊 tō ē 親像對待 Saint Bartholomew án-ne 剝我 ê 皮."
"伊袂做彼款代誌 lah," Don Quixote 講, "只要我命令, 伊 tō ē 聽話. 既然伊已經 kō͘ 騎士身份 tùi 我咒誓, 我才放伊走, 我保證伊 ē 付錢."
"照你所講, 先生," 少年人講, "阮主人毋是騎士 lah, 伊 mā 無任何騎士 ê 身份. 因為伊是 Quintanar 地方 ê 財主, 叫 Juan Haldudo."
"Che 無啥要緊," Don Quixote ìn, "Haldudo 家族 mā ē-sái 有騎士, 尤其是, 人 ê 品德在 tī 伊 ê 行為 (everyone is the son of his works)."

CHAPTER IV.
OF WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR KNIGHT WHEN HE LEFT THE INN
4.1
Day was dawning when Don Quixote quitted the inn, so happy, so gay, so exhilarated at finding himself now dubbed a knight, that his joy was like to burst his horse-girths. However, recalling the advice of his host as to the requisites he ought to carry with him, especially that referring to money and shirts, he determined to go home and provide himself with all, and also with a squire, for he reckoned upon securing a farm-labourer, a neighbour of his, a poor man with a family, but very well qualified for the office of squire to a knight. With this object he turned his horse’s head towards his village, and Rocinante, thus reminded of his old quarters, stepped out so briskly that he hardly seemed to tread the earth.
He had not gone far, when out of a thicket on his right there seemed to come feeble cries as of someone in distress, and the instant he heard them he exclaimed, /
“Thanks be to heaven for the favour it accords me, that it so soon offers me an opportunity of fulfilling the obligation I have undertaken, and gathering the fruit of my ambition. These cries, no doubt, come from some man or woman in want of help, and needing my aid and protection;” and wheeling, he turned Rocinante in the direction whence the cries seemed to proceed. /
He had gone but a few paces into the wood, when he saw a mare tied to an oak, and tied to another, and stripped from the waist upwards, a youth of about fifteen years of age, from whom the cries came. Nor were they without cause, for a lusty farmer was flogging him with a belt and following up every blow with scoldings and commands, repeating,
“Your mouth shut and your eyes open!” while the youth made answer,
“I won’t do it again, master mine; by God’s passion I won’t do it again, and I’ll take more care of the flock another time.”
Seeing what was going on, Don Quixote said in an angry voice, /
“Discourteous knight, it ill becomes you to assail one who cannot defend himself; mount your steed and take your lance” (for there was a lance leaning against the oak to which the mare was tied), “and I will make you know that you are behaving as a coward.” /
The farmer, seeing before him this figure in full armour brandishing a lance over his head, gave himself up for dead, and made answer meekly, /
“Sir Knight, this youth that I am chastising is my servant, employed by me to watch a flock of sheep that I have hard by, and he is so careless that I lose one every day, and when I punish him for his carelessness and knavery he says I do it out of niggardliness, to escape paying him the wages I owe him, and before God, and on my soul, he lies.”
“Lies before me, base clown!” said Don Quixote. “By the sun that shines on us I have a mind to run you through with this lance. Pay him at once without another word; if not, by the God that rules us I will make an end of you, and annihilate you on the spot; release him instantly.”
The farmer hung his head, and without a word untied his servant, of whom Don Quixote asked how much his master owed him.
He replied, nine months at seven reals a month. Don Quixote added it up, found that it came to sixty-three reals, and told the farmer to pay it down immediately, if he did not want to die for it.
The trembling clown replied that as he lived and by the oath he had sworn (though he had not sworn any) it was not so much; for there were to be taken into account and deducted three pairs of shoes he had given him, and a real for two blood-lettings when he was sick.
“All that is very well,” said Don Quixote; “but let the shoes and the blood-lettings stand as a setoff against the blows you have given him without any cause; for if he spoiled the leather of the shoes you paid for, you have damaged that of his body, and if the barber took blood from him when he was sick, you have drawn it when he was sound; so on that score he owes you nothing.”
“The difficulty is, Sir Knight, that I have no money here; let Andres come home with me, and I will pay him all, real by real.”
“I go with him!” said the youth. “Nay, God forbid! No, señor, not for the world; for once alone with me, he would flay me like a Saint Bartholomew.”
“He will do nothing of the kind,” said Don Quixote; “I have only to command, and he will obey me; and as he has sworn to me by the order of knighthood which he has received, I leave him free, and I guarantee the payment.”
“Consider what you are saying, señor,” said the youth; “this master of mine is not a knight, nor has he received any order of knighthood; for he is Juan Haldudo the Rich, of Quintanar.”
“That matters little,” replied Don Quixote; “there may be Haldudos knights; moreover, everyone is the son of his works.”
