3.3 M̄-bat ū ê gî-sek kiat-sok

M̄-koh tiàm-chú kám-kak lâng-kheh ê kâu-lāng siuⁿ m̄-sī khoán, tō koat-tēng kín seng kā hit-ê lak-soe ê khî-sū miâ-hō hong hō͘ i, bián-tit koh ū siáⁿ pháiⁿ tāi-chì hoat-seng. Chŏaⁿ, i kiâⁿ kàu Don Quixote bīn-chêng, piáu-sī pháiⁿ-sè, kóng, hiah-ê hā-téng lâng tùi i bô-lé, i sū-sian oân-choân m̄-chai, m̄-koh in ê chho͘-ló͘ í-keng tit-tio̍h pò-èng. I koh kóng, thâu-seng í-keng kóng-kòe, pún siâⁿ-pó bô sió kàu-tn̂g, kî-thaⁿ ê gî-sek mā m̄-bián ah. M̄-koh 店主感覺人客 ê 猴弄 siuⁿ 毋是款, tō 決定緊先 kā 彼个落衰 ê 騎士名號封 hō͘ 伊, 免得 koh 有啥歹代誌發生. Chŏaⁿ, 伊行到 Don Quixote 面前, 表示歹勢, 講, hiah-ê 下等人 tùi 伊無禮, 伊事先完全毋知, m̄-koh in ê 粗魯已經得著報應. 伊 koh 講, 頭先已經講過, 本城堡無小教堂, 其他 ê 儀式 mā 毋免 ah. 就伊所知, 封騎士 ê 儀式上重要 ê 點是 kō͘ 劍拍肩頭, che ē-sái tī 野外舉行. 今伊已經完成為盔甲守暝 ê 部份, 因為只要守 2 點鐘 tō ē-sái, á 伊已經守 4 點鐘 ah. Don Quixote 信 kah 真真, tō 講, 今伊 teh 聽候伊 ê 命令, hó-thang 緊來完成儀式; 受封了後, 假使 koh 受著攻擊, 伊袂 koh 留活口 tī 城堡內, 除非是因為 tùi 城主 ê 尊重, 伊所吩咐放過 ê 人. 

受著這種警告 kap 威脅, 城主即刻去提出一本數簿, 內面記伊交 hō͘ ku-lí ê 草料 kap 大麥, 𤆬一个攑一節蠟燭頭 ê 囡仔, kap hit 兩个查某, 轉來 Don Quixote 徛 ê 位, 叫伊跪落來. 然後伊看 he 數簿 ná 念, 袂輸 teh 做虔誠 ê 祈禱. 讀到一半, 伊攑手大大力拍一下 Don Quixote ê 頷頸, 然後 koh kō͘ Don Quixote ka-tī ê 劍 tī 伊 ê 肩胛頭緊緊 sut 一下. 規个過程喙 ni̍h ngau̍h-ngau̍h 念, 袂輸 teh 祈禱.

Án-ne 了後, 伊指示其中一个女士為伊佩劍, hit 人做 kah 鎮靜 koh 頂真, 克制 ka-tī tī 儀式過程無笑出來. M̄-koh, in lóng 看過這个新騎士 ê 神勇, mā hō͘ in m̄-káⁿ 笑出來. Teh 為伊佩劍 ê 時, 彼个尊貴 ê 女士 án-ne 對伊講:

"願神保庇你成做好運 ê 騎士, tī 戰鬥中得著祝福."

Don Quixote 問她 ê 名, hó-thang 會記得這个恩情, 伊欲 kā 以後靠手骨 ê 力得著 ê 光榮分一寡 hō͘ 她. 她謙虛講, 她叫 La Tolosa, 是 Toledo 所在一个鞋仔師 ê 查某囝, 蹛 tī Sanchobienaya ê 擔頭附近, 毋管去佗位, 她總 ē kā 伊服務, kā 伊當做 ka-tī ê 主人. Don Quixote án-ne kā ìn, 你若採用 "Don" 這个頭銜, 以後叫你 ka-tī 做 Doña Tolosa, án-ne 我 tō 真有面子. 她講她願意. 然後, 另外彼个女士為伊結馬刺, Don Quixote mā kap 她交談, 講類似伊 kap 佩劍女士 ê 對話. 伊問她 ê 名, 她講她叫 La Molinera, 是 Antequera 所在一个尊嚴 ê 磨房主 ê 查某囝. Don Quixote mā 求她採用 "Don" 這个頭銜, 叫 ka-tī Doña Molinera, 以後伊 ē 為她效勞盡力. 

自 án-ne, 緊 koh 燒烙, 這種 m̄-bat 有 ê 儀式結束 ah. Don Quixote 忍袂牢, 緊欲上馬出外去弄險. Kā Rocinante 裝好馬鞍, 伊 sûi 上馬, 回頭攬店主, 感謝伊賜伊騎士名號, koh 講一寡有 ê 無 ê, 無人聽會曉, mā 講袂來. 店主, 愛伊緊出去, tō 簡短 ìn 伊一寡虛花 ê 話, mā 無叫伊納數, koh 祝伊一路順風緊走.

But these freaks of his guest were not much to the liking of the landlord, so he determined to cut matters short and confer upon him at once the unlucky order of knighthood before any further misadventure could occur; so, going up to him, he apologised for the rudeness which, without his knowledge, had been offered to him by these low people, who, however, had been well punished for their audacity. As he had already told him, he said, there was no chapel in the castle, nor was it needed for what remained to be done, for, as he understood the ceremonial of the order, the whole point of being dubbed a knight lay in the accolade and in the slap on the shoulder, and that could be administered in the middle of a field; and that he had now done all that was needful as to watching the armour, for all requirements were satisfied by a watch of two hours only, while he had been more than four about it. Don Quixote believed it all, and told him he stood there ready to obey him, and to make an end of it with as much despatch as possible; for, if he were again attacked, and felt himself to be dubbed knight, he would not, he thought, leave a soul alive in the castle, except such as out of respect he might spare at his bidding.

Thus warned and menaced, the castellan forthwith brought out a book in which he used to enter the straw and barley he served out to the carriers, and, with a lad carrying a candle-end, and the two damsels already mentioned, he returned to where Don Quixote stood, and bade him kneel down. Then, reading from his account-book as if he were repeating some devout prayer, in the middle of his delivery he raised his hand and gave him a sturdy blow on the neck, and then, with his own sword, a smart slap on the shoulder, all the while muttering between his teeth as if he was saying his prayers. /

Having done this, he directed one of the ladies to gird on his sword, which she did with great self-possession and gravity, and not a little was required to prevent a burst of laughter at each stage of the ceremony; but what they had already seen of the novice knight’s prowess kept their laughter within bounds. On girding him with the sword the worthy lady said to him, /

“May God make your worship a very fortunate knight, and grant you success in battle.” /

Don Quixote asked her name in order that he might from that time forward know to whom he was beholden for the favour he had received, as he meant to confer upon her some portion of the honour he acquired by the might of his arm. She answered with great humility that she was called La Tolosa, and that she was the daughter of a cobbler of Toledo who lived in the stalls of Sanchobienaya, and that wherever she might be she would serve and esteem him as her lord. Don Quixote said in reply that she would do him a favour if thenceforward she assumed the “Don” and called herself Doña Tolosa. She promised she would, and then the other buckled on his spur, and with her followed almost the same conversation as with the lady of the sword. He asked her name, and she said it was La Molinera, and that she was the daughter of a respectable miller of Antequera; and of her likewise Don Quixote requested that she would adopt the “Don” and call herself Doña Molinera, making offers to her further services and favours.

Having thus, with hot haste and speed, brought to a conclusion these never-till-now-seen ceremonies, Don Quixote was on thorns until he saw himself on horseback sallying forth in quest of adventures; and saddling Rocinante at once he mounted, and embracing his host, as he returned thanks for his kindness in knighting him, he addressed him in language so extraordinary that it is impossible to convey an idea of it or report it. The landlord, to get him out of the inn, replied with no less rhetoric though with shorter words, and without calling upon him to pay the reckoning let him go with a Godspeed.
