1.2 Kan-ta khiàm chi̍t-ê só͘-ài ê lú-sū
Siōng tāi-seng, i kā in a-chó͘ ê chiàn-kah chhit chheng-khì. He í-keng chin kú bô iōng, hông phiaⁿ tī chhù-kak teh àu, í-keng seⁿ-ko͘ chhiūⁿ-phú. I chīn-liōng kā chhit chheng-khì, kā lù hō͘ kim, m̄-koh i kám-kak khó-sioh ê sī, he thâu-khoe kan-ta khàm thâu-khak-téng, bô pau kàu bīn. Chit-ê khiàm-tiám, ka-chài ē-tàng kō͘ i ê chhong-bêng lâi pó͘-kiù. I siat-kè chi̍t-ê kō͘ chóa-pang chò ê ē-pòaⁿ-chat, kā tàu tī hit-téng thâu-khoe, khòaⁿ khí-lâi tō sī oân-chéng ê thâu-khoe. Tāi-chì khak-si̍t sī án-ne, ūi-tio̍h boeh chhì-giām che kám ū-kàu kiat-si̍t, kám ē kham-tit to, i thiu-kiàm boeh kā phut khòaⁿ-māi. Kiat-kó, chi̍t-ē chhut-to sûi tō kā he kui lé-pài ê sêng-kó húi-tiāu.
Khòaⁿ-tio̍h he hiah chhìn-chhái tō phut-phòa, hō͘ i chin bē-sóng. I tō koh chò chi̍t-ê, ūi-tio̍h pī-bián chit-chióng hûi-hiám, i tī lāi-bīn tàu thih-tiâu, it-ti̍t kàu i kám-kak ū-kàu ióng, m̄-koh i bē-giàn koh chò si̍t-giām, chiū án-ne kā he tòng-chò sī chi̍t-téng chòe oân-bí ê thâu-khoe.
Koh-lâi, i khai-sí kiám-cha i ê bé, he mô͘-pēⁿ khah chē kòe chèng-siông ê bé, khoat-tiám mā pí Gonela khiâ hit-phit "phôe-pau-kut" khah chē, m̄-koh chāi i khòaⁿ, he khah iâⁿ Alexander khiâ ê Bucephalus, mā khah hó Cid khiâ ê Babieca.
I khai 4 kang sî-kan kā bé hō-miâ, in-ūi (i án-ne tùi ka-tī kóng), chhiūⁿ i chiah chhut-miâ, chiah chē iu-tiám ê khî-sū, só͘ khiâ ê bé nā bô chhut-sek ê hó miâ bē-sái. I boeh kā hō chi̍t-ê hó miâ, hō͘ lâng chai-iáⁿ, tī chiâⁿ-chò iû-kiap khî-sū ê bé í-chêng i sī án-chóaⁿ, āu-lâi i iū-sī án-chóaⁿ. In-ūi chú-lâng ê sin-hūn kái-piàn, bé ê miâ mā tio̍h kái, án-ne chin ha̍p-lí. Chit-ê miâ tio̍h ài chhut-sek koh hiáng-liāng, chiah ē-tàng hû-ha̍p só͘ bīn-tùi ê jīm-bū kap sú-bēng.
Chū án-ne, khò kì-tî kap sióng-siōng, i siūⁿ chhut chióng-chióng ê miâ, hō hó ōe-tiāu, siu-kái, pó͘-chhiong, hìⁿ-sak, koh têng hō, kàu chòe-āu i koat-tēng boeh kiò i Rocinante. Chit-ê miâ, chāi i ê siūⁿ-hoat, kài ko-sióng, hiáng-liāng, piáu-sī chit-phit bé goân-pún lo̍k-kho̍k, taⁿ sī sè-kài it-liû.
Hō chi̍t-ê chiah-nī ha̍h sim-ì ê miâ hō͘ i ê bé liáu-āu, i mā kip boeh siūⁿ chi̍t-ê miâ hō͘ ka-tī. Che koh khai 8 kang sî-kan khì siūⁿ, kàu chòe-āu, i koat-tēng boeh kō͘ "Don Quixote" chit-ê miâ-hō kiò ka-tī. I tùi ka-tī án-ne kóng: M̄-kóan sī chōe-kò a̍h hó-ūn, góa nā tī tó-ūi tú-tio̍h chi̍t-ê kī-jîn, che tùi iû-kiap khî-sū sī sù-siông ê tāi-chì, góa chi̍t-ē tō kā phah-tó chāi-tē a̍h kā chám-chò nn̄g-koe̍h, chóng-kóng chi̍t-kù, góa chiàn-iâⁿ i, hō͘ i hâng-ho̍k; kám m̄-sī chin hó, góa nā ē-tàng kā i chò lé-mi̍h sàng khì bó͘-lâng hia, hō͘ i ji̍p-khì, kūi tī góa chhin-ài ê hu-jîn bīn-chêng, khiam-pi kē-siaⁿ kóng:

Oh, chit-ê sin-sū gōa-nī kah-ì chit-kù ōe ah, iû-kî siūⁿ tio̍h ū chi̍t-ê i ē-tàng kiò Hu-jîn ê lâng ê sî! Thiaⁿ-kóng tī in chng hū-kīn ū chi̍t-ê chin súi ê chng-kha ko͘-niû, he i it-ti̍t ài tī sim-lāi, m̄-koh thiaⁿ-kóng hit-ê ko͘-niû m̄-chai, mā bô tì-kak tio̍h chit-ê sū.

1.2 Kan-ta 欠一个所愛 ê 女士
上代先, 伊 kā in 阿祖 ê 戰甲拭清氣. He 已經真久無用, hông 抨 tī 厝角 teh àu, 已經生菇上殕. 伊盡量 kā 拭清氣, kā lù hō͘ 金, m̄-koh 伊感覺可惜 ê 是, he 頭盔 kan-ta 崁頭殼頂, 無包到面. 這个欠點, 佳哉 ē-tàng kō͘ 伊 ê 聰明來補救. 伊設計一个 kō͘ 紙枋做 ê 下半節, kā tàu tī hit 頂頭盔, 看起來 tō 是完整 ê 頭盔. 代誌確實是 án-ne, 為著欲試驗 che kám 有夠結實, kám 會堪得刀, 伊抽劍欲 kā phut 看覓. 結果, 一下出刀隨 tō kā he 規禮拜 ê 成果毀掉.
看著 he hiah 凊彩 tō phut 破, hō͘ 伊真袂爽. 伊 tō koh 做一个, 為著避免這種危險, 伊 tī 內面 tàu 鐵條, 一直到伊感覺有夠勇, m̄-koh 伊 bē-giàn koh 做實驗, 就 án-ne kā he 當做是一頂最完美 ê 頭盔.
Koh-lâi, 伊開始檢查伊 ê 馬, he 毛病較濟過正常 ê 馬, 缺點 mā 比 Gonela 騎 hit 匹 "皮包骨" 較濟, m̄-koh 在伊看, he 較贏 Alexander 騎 ê Bucephalus, mā 較好 Cid 騎 ê Babieca.
伊開 4 工時間 kā 馬號名, 因為 (伊 án-ne 對 ka-tī 講), 像伊 chiah 出名, chiah 濟優點 ê 騎士, 所騎 ê 馬若無出色 ê 好名 bē-sái. 伊欲 kā 號一个好名, hō͘ 人知影, tī 成做遊俠騎士 ê 馬以前伊是 án-chóaⁿ, 後來伊又是 án-chóaⁿ. 因為主人 ê 身份改變, 馬 ê 名 mā 著改, án-ne 真合理. 這个名著愛出色 koh 響亮, 才 ē-tàng 符合所面對 ê 任務 kap 使命.
自 án-ne, 靠記持 kap 想像, 伊想出種種 ê 名, 號好畫掉, 修改, 補充, hìⁿ-sak, koh 重號, 到最後伊決定欲叫伊 Rocinante. 這个名, 在伊 ê 想法, kài 高尚, 響亮, 表示這匹馬原本 lo̍k-kho̍k, 今是世界一流.
號一个 chiah-nī 合心意 ê 名 hō͘ 伊 ê 馬了後, 伊 mā 急欲想一个名 hō͘ ka-tī. Che koh 開 8 工時間去想, 到最後, 伊決定欲 kō͘ "Don Quixote" 這个名號叫 ka-tī. 頭前咱有講過, 這个真實故事 ê 作者認為, 伊定著是叫做 Quixada, 毋是 ná 別人所講 ê Quesada.
M̄-koh, 想著勇敢 ê Amadis 無滿意單單 kō͘ Amadis 這个名叫 ka-tī, 欲 kā 王國 kap 故鄉 ê 名 mā 加起 lih, án-ne 來光耀故里, tō 叫 ka-tī 是 Gaul ê Amadis, 仝款, 伊做一个優秀騎士, mā 欲 án-ne 加 tī 伊 ê 名, tō 叫 ka-tī 是 La Mancha ê Don Quixote. 伊認為, án-ne m̄-nā 準確表示伊 ê 出身 kap 故鄉, mā ē-tàng kō͘ ka-tī ê 名榮耀故里.
自 án-ne, 伊 ê 戰甲清氣 liu-liu, 頭盔崁到規个頭, 馬有號名, ka-tī ê 名號 mā 已經確定, 伊得著一个結論, 今伊 kan-ta 欠一个所愛 ê 女士. 因為無愛情 ê 遊俠騎士 tō ná 像樹仔無葉仔, 無果子, 是無靈魂 ê 身軀.
伊對 ka-tī án-ne 講: 毋管是罪過 a̍h 好運, 我若 tī 佗位拄著一个巨人, che 對遊俠騎士是四常 ê 代誌, 我一下 tō kā 拍倒在地 a̍h kā 斬做兩 koe̍h, 總講一句, 我戰贏伊, hō͘ 伊降服; 敢毋是真好, 我若 ē-tàng kā 伊做 lé-mi̍h 送去某人 hia, hō͘ 伊入去, 跪 tī 我親愛 ê 夫人面前, 謙卑低聲講:
"夫人, 我是巨人 Caraculiambro, Malindrania 島 ê 領主, hō͘ 絕代騎士 La Mancha ê Don Quixote tī 釘孤枝 ê 時拍敗, 伊命令我來見夫人, 聽候夫人 ê 吩咐"?
Oh, 這个紳士 gōa-nī 佮意這句話 ah, 尤其想著有一个伊 ē-tàng 叫夫人 ê 人 ê 時! 聽講 tī in 庄附近有一个真媠 ê 庄跤姑娘, he 伊一直愛 tī 心內, m̄-koh 聽講彼个姑娘 m̄-chai, mā 無致覺著這个事.
她 ê 名是 Aldonza Lorenzo, 伊認為 kā 這个姑娘封做伊 ê 想像夫人 kài 適合. 伊欲 kā 她號一个名, bē-sái 失去 kap 她原名 ê 協調, koh 著暗示公主 kap 貴夫人. 伊決定欲叫她 Dulcinea del Toboso (她蹛 tī El Toboso). 伊感覺這个名有音樂性, 超凡, 有意義, 袂較輸伊已經 hō͘ ka-tī kap hō͘ 其他 mi̍h ê 名.

The first thing he did was to clean up some armour that had belonged to his great-grandfather, and had been for ages lying forgotten in a corner eaten with rust and covered with mildew. He scoured and polished it as best he could, but he perceived one great defect in it, that it had no closed helmet, nothing but a simple morion. This deficiency, however, his ingenuity supplied, for he contrived a kind of half-helmet of pasteboard which, fitted on to the morion, looked like a whole one. It is true that, in order to see if it was strong and fit to stand a cut, he drew his sword and gave it a couple of slashes, the first of which undid in an instant what had taken him a week to do. /
The ease with which he had knocked it to pieces disconcerted him somewhat, and to guard against that danger he set to work again, fixing bars of iron on the inside until he was satisfied with its strength; and then, not caring to try any more experiments with it, he passed it and adopted it as a helmet of the most perfect construction.
He next proceeded to inspect his hack, which, with more quartos than a real and more blemishes than the steed of Gonela, that “tantum pellis et ossa fuit,” surpassed in his eyes the Bucephalus of Alexander or the Babieca of the Cid. /
Four days were spent in thinking what name to give him, because (as he said to himself) it was not right that a horse belonging to a knight so famous, and one with such merits of his own, should be without some distinctive name, and he strove to adapt it so as to indicate what he had been before belonging to a knight-errant, and what he then was; for it was only reasonable that, his master taking a new character, he should take a new name, and that it should be a distinguished and full-sounding one, befitting the new order and calling he was about to follow. /
And so, after having composed, struck out, rejected, added to, unmade, and remade a multitude of names out of his memory and fancy, he decided upon calling him Rocinante, a name, to his thinking, lofty, sonorous, and significant of his condition as a hack before he became what he now was, the first and foremost of all the hacks in the world.
Having got a name for his horse so much to his taste, he was anxious to get one for himself, and he was eight days more pondering over this point, till at last he made up his mind to call himself “Don Quixote,” whence, as has been already said, the authors of this veracious history have inferred that his name must have been beyond a doubt Quixada, and not Quesada as others would have it. /
Recollecting, however, that the valiant Amadis was not content to call himself curtly Amadis and nothing more, but added the name of his kingdom and country to make it famous, and called himself Amadis of Gaul, he, like a good knight, resolved to add on the name of his, and to style himself Don Quixote of La Mancha, whereby, he considered, he described accurately his origin and country, and did honour to it in taking his surname from it.
So then, his armour being furbished, his morion turned into a helmet, his hack christened, and he himself confirmed, he came to the conclusion that nothing more was needed now but to look out for a lady to be in love with; for a knight-errant without love was like a tree without leaves or fruit, or a body without a soul. /
As he said to himself, “If, for my sins, or by my good fortune, I come across some giant hereabouts, a common occurrence with knights-errant, and overthrow him in one onslaught, or cleave him asunder to the waist, or, in short, vanquish and subdue him, will it not be well to have someone I may send him to as a present, that he may come in and fall on his knees before my sweet lady, and in a humble, submissive voice say, /
‘I am the giant Caraculiambro, lord of the island of Malindrania, vanquished in single combat by the never sufficiently extolled knight Don Quixote of La Mancha, who has commanded me to present myself before your Grace, that your Highness dispose of me at your pleasure’?” /
Oh, how our good gentleman enjoyed the delivery of this speech, especially when he had thought of someone to call his Lady! There was, so the story goes, in a village near his own a very good-looking farm-girl with whom he had been at one time in love, though, so far as is known, she never knew it nor gave a thought to the matter. /
Her name was Aldonza Lorenzo, and upon her he thought fit to confer the title of Lady of his Thoughts; and after some search for a name which should not be out of harmony with her own, and should suggest and indicate that of a princess and great lady, he decided upon calling her Dulcinea del Toboso—she being of El Toboso—a name, to his mind, musical, uncommon, and significant, like all those he had already bestowed upon himself and the things belonging to him.
